Plenty of Garlic Gadgets Available for Garlic Lovers
No kitchen is complete without a few accessories all developed for the sole purpose of extracting the delicious flavor of garlic. No matter if a person is of an Italian descent, an Italian food lover, a professional chef, or a regular person who likes the taste of garlic, the proper garlic tools are necessities. Garlic is a strong smelling and tasting, and specific garlic gadgets make the cloves easier to peel, crush, chop, press, roast, and grate.
Garlic is an ingredient present in many recipes. Since it can have a strong flavor, it is sometimes used in small amounts. However, there are many people who love the taste of garlic and can’t seem to get enough of it. For these people, garlic can be added to recipes in bulk. Since garlic must be removed from its skin before it is used, several tools can assist in making this sometimes difficult job much easier.
Most garlic tools can be purchased for a relatively small amount of money, some as little as a few dollars. However, there are quite a few tools which all do different things to a clove of garlic, and a person may or may not need all of them. The need for the tools depends on how much garlic a person tends to use in their daily or weekly cooking.
Garlic Peeler
No matter if a single garlic clove or a whole head of garlic is being used for a recipe, everyone can benefit from a garlic peeler. Anyone who has ever tried to peel individual garlic cloves using their fingernails knows how tedious it can be. A garlic peeler can greatly speed up the peeling process and it is very easy to use. By placing a clove or garlic in a garlic peeler, the skin of the garlic sticks to the peeler and the inside of the garlic clove is left for cooking. Using this tool will speed up the garlic peeling process and at the same time it will alleviate the everlasting garlic smell that can remain on fingers.
Garlic Roasters
True garlic lovers should not live without a garlic roaster. While a piece of aluminum foil can serve as a makeshift garlic roaster, an official roaster, made out of a terra cotta plate, a rounded lid, and ventilation holes, is the best way to roast a head of garlic. Placing an entire head of garlic (with the top cut off) in a roaster and drizzling it with olive oil, salt and pepper, and baking for about one hour will yield a delicious, soft head of garlic. Individual garlic cloves can be squeezed out of the head and spread directly on a cracker or a piece of bread for a delicious treat.
Garlic Slicers
It’s very difficult to cut garlic into very thin pieces using a knife, and it takes a lot of practice and experience to slice garlic in an efficient manner. So, if a large number of garlic slices is needed for a recipe, a garlic slicer can come in very handy. Garlic slicers ensure that pieces of garlic are uniform in shape and thickness, and they are as easy to use as cheese graters!
Garlic Keepers
Most people come home from the grocery store with a bag full of garlic heads and throw them in the refrigerator. This, however, is not a recommended place to store garlic. In fact, garlic should not be stored on a kitchen counter either since direct sunlight is not good for it. Garlic keepers can be cute accessories to add to any kitchen, as they come in many styles. Storing heads of garlic in a garlic keeper allows the garlic to remain in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Garlic Press
Simply chopping a clove of garlic into a million pieces with a knife and a chopping board does not produce the same effect as a piece of garlic that has been put through a garlic press. A garlic press is a tool that squeezes the garlic and presses it into tiny pieces. Some recipes call specifically for pressed garlic, and there is really no way to obtain pressed garlic without using this specific tool.
There are numerous other garlic tools and gadgets available, and most are very inexpensive. The best way to determine what is needed in a specific kitchen is to evaluate the daily, weekly and/or monthly garlic consumption in a household, and judge what tools would make preparing the garlic easier for the cook.

5 Reasons to Choose a Notebook Over a Desktop Computer
Many of us are so used to working on a computer desktop that when it comes time to purchase a new computer, we don’t consider other options. Today, computer notebooks – which were once called laptops – offer a number of advantages over a computer desktop. Here are just five reasons why you should take a second look at notebooks.
1. Mobility
You might be used to pulling up a chair to your computer, but it makes much more sense to pull your computer up to your chair. Laptops can certainly be used at your desk, but you also have the option of bringing them to the spot where you’re most comfortable. Maybe you’d like to surf the Web in the evening out in the living room or catch up on your favorite blogs before bedtime. Notebooks with wireless connectivity can travel with you throughout your home, so you can check your email or do your Internet shopping anywhere.
Of course, notebooks also make sense for those who are on the go. Students can take laptops to class and to the library, while businesspeople can take them along while traveling. With WiFi so widely available, it even makes sense to have a notebook while on vacation. With the right notebook, it’s easy to take photos with your digital camera, upload them, and email them to friends and family before you even get back home. Or you can use it to write a vacation blog and include those pictures from your digital camera.
2. Better Displays
The size and quality of computer notebook displays has improved so dramatically that there’s little difference between laptops and a computer desktop. For example, you can get Apple’s MacBook with a 13.3-inch LCD widescreen (1280 x 800 pixels), a 15.4-inch LCD widescreen (1440 x 900 pixels) or a 17-inch widescreen (1680 x 1050 pixels). Similarly, the Compaq Presario has a 15.4-inch display.
3. Lighter Weight
Just a few years ago, even the lightest notebook was a pain to lug around. Today, though, laptops are increasingly easy on the back. The MacBook is slightly over an inch thick and the Toshiba Portege weighs in at about four pounds. While that’s still heavy compared to come of the new ultralight convertibles (Fujitsu’s LifeBook U810 weighs only a pound and half), it’s a significant improvement over the old seven-pound laptops.
4. Better Computing and Battery Power
Historically, two drawbacks of notebooks were their limited RAM, limited space on the hard drive, and short battery life. Times have changed, though, and laptops now have as much power under the hood as their computer desktop cousins. The MacBook, for example, has 1GB of memory (configurable up to 4 GB) and a hard drive that’s configurable to 250GB. This means that your software will hum right along and you’ll be able to zip through programs as quickly and as easily as you do on your desktop. Likewise, batteries in today’s notebooks don’t heat up and don’t conk out.
5. More Features
In older laptops, the computer’s size and weight limited the number and types of features available. Today, with smaller processors and other components, there’s room to pack more features into notebooks. For example, the MacBook has a DVD player, built-in webcam, built-in wireless capability, two USB ports and a FireWire port, built-in microphone, and audio and digital input/output.
There are so many advantages to owning notebooks that, before you buy your next computer, it’s worth your while to take one for a spin.

What to Do If You Find Dead Pixels on Your Laptop Screen
Let’s say you’ve bought a brand new laptop. You go home, unwrap the device and boot up the machine. Then you notice some bright spots / dead pixels on your laptop screen. No, it’s not insignificant or one tiny speck – there are quite a number of dead pixels there!
If you face this situation, be aware that you don’t have to live with the defective dead pixels on your laptop. You can in fact do a number things, anything from getting the laptop replaced to having your display fixed. Let’s take a look at what you need to do if you detect dead pixels on your laptop screen.
1. Overview
Before we begin, we need to understand what exactly is a dead pixel on your laptop screen. A dead pixel, by definition, is a dot of display on your lapotp screen that remains unlit. These dead pixels are usually best seen against a white background. They are usually caused by manufacturing defects and manufacturers have a clause to say a certain number of such pixels are permissible in a brand new laptop.
2. Dead Pixel Test Program
A good thing to do, if you suspect that your laptop has dead pixels, is to use a dead pixel test program like Dead Pixel Buddy. The program has a wizard which will step you through display of different background colours on your screen so you can see which dead pixels are present. This is useful if you want to prove to the manufacturer that a dead pixel exists.
3. Check The Manufacturer’s Dead Pixel Policy
Every laptop manufacturer (the more well known ones at least, like Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, Apple, etc) has a ‘dead pixel policy’. For example, if you have more than 7 dead pixels in your Dell laptop, you can approach Dell to have it replaced. If you have more than 3 dead pixels in your Fujitsu laptop, you can get it replaced. So the policy differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. It even differs between retail shop to retail shop. So check carefully before you purchase the machine.
4. Stuck Pixels and Hot Pixels
We’ve spoken about dead pixels – but be aware that there are things like stuck pixels and hot pixels too. A stuck pixel is most visible against a black background, where it will might appear red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, or yellow. A hot pixel is a permanently lit pixel and are more obvious against a black background. Technically, a stuck or hot pixel is not considered a dead pixel. So in checking your manufacturer’s policy, you might also want to ask about stuck and hot pixels too (most of them don’t cover these defects).
5. Correcting Dead Pixels
There is usually no way to fix a dead pixel. The reason is that this is usually a hardware defect. Stuck pixels can be corrected using software – there is a program called JScreenFix that flashes numerous colors with a very rapid intensity onto your screen. You can also correct stuck pixels by gently rubbing the affected pixel area.
Conclusion
I hope this article gives you a good insight into what dead pixels are. You now know what you can do about dead pixels in your laptop – make sure you check your manufacturer’s dead pixel policy before you buy the machine. Also, you should be aware of the distinction between dead, hot and stuck pixels. Until next time, here’s wishing you happy computing!

Laptop Computer Cooling Pads For All
Do you have a laptop computer? Where do you use it the most? On your lap, in the car, while traveling, in bed, while watching television – actually anywhere since you can take it and go.
I find that I use my laptop computer the most on my lap, in bed or in my favorite chair. After all that is why they call it a laptop right? Do you notice when you use the laptop either for gaming (which can lead into hours) or just for writing articles (which could lead to long hours too) that the laptop starts to get your legs very hot? Have you ever placed your laptop on the bed – I mean just for awhile? Then you remember where it is and try to pick it up and it is really hot? My son called me the other day and his laptop got accidently turned on in his backpack – he failed to notice for three hours. He said it was so hot he could barely touch it. What can you do to prevent your laptop from getting so hot?
There are three top choices out there you can look at. They are the Belkin Laptop Cooling Pad, belkin Ac Adapter or the Vantec Lapcool. All three are worth the money, but all have their little quirks, so keep reading to find the one that best fits your needs.
Belkin Laptop Cooling Pad cools your computer very nicely. You can purchase one ranging from $19.95 – $29.95. They have a one year warranty, gentle slope to prevent wrist strain or to help those who have carpel tunnel syndrome, raises the screen to help reduce neck strain, fits into your laptop bag, also contains a convenient compartment for USB cables and grip pads to prevent your laptop from slipping out of your lap.
If you are going to type on a table top, the cooling pad has a built in stand that folds out to allow the air to circulate. There are no big bulky adapters to deal with, just a small USB cord that plugs into your laptop. With all of these features, I found it hard to believe that it was so cheap.
Belkin has another product called the Belkin Ac Adapter Stand. This is also a very good product from Belkin, although it is not as good as the Belkin Cooling stand. When you place this stand on the table, you must reach back and flip up a plate in the rear portion of the stand. If you are not careful and just blindly reach back to flip the plate, you can risk touching the fan. Now this is not too bad, you will not cry, but it is an irritating design flaw.
Vantec Lapcool is another great laptop cooler. It comes with a 12 month parts and labor warranty. The greatest feature was a variable fan speed which the other two did not. It also has four extra USB ports, which if you have an older or cheaper laptop, you might just have one USB port. This comes in handy if you have flash drives and other extras that take a USB port. It also has an eight in one memory card reader. Now this almost makes this product a must buy.
How many people have a digital camera? I do and I found out that my computer did not support the memory card that came with the camera. So, I had to constantly plug the camera into the USB port to download my pictures or videos. This was just a hassle and almost mad the digital camera not worth the effort. But with the eight in one memory card reader, my camera’s memory card fits in and I can download the pictures in a flash. It does cost a little bit more (around $47), but if you are having a problem with memory cards this may just be worth the money.
Another laptop cooling solution is the Vizo Xena Mini Laptop Cooler. This is a miniature cooler that can fit into the laptop’s cabinet and is easy to carry around. It does not require an external power connection – it comes with a USB connection and draws its power directly from the USB port. And finally, another great feature is that it has adjustable feet so that you can control the angle of the cool air flow in the cabinet.
In the long run, getting a laptop cooling pad just makes sense. Your laptop keeps cooler so while you are working it is not heating you up and it prolongs the life of your computer.
